Here are commenly used steroids, which is needed after a Transplant:

Prednazone/Pred Forte

Please note the following in the link below about this steroid:

"Various ocular diseases and long-term use of topical corticosteroids have been known to cause corneal and scleral thinning. Use of topical corticosteroids in the presence of thin corneal or scleral tissue may lead to perforation."

http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/drugInfo.cfm?id=1916

Maxidex/Dexamethosone

Please note the following in the link below about this steroid:

"In those diseases causing thinning of the cornea or sclera, perforations have been known to occur with the use of topical corticosteroids."

http://dailymed.nlm.nih.gov/dailymed/fdaDrugXsl.cfm?id=1306&type=display

So steroids causes thinning (other things too)... and i noticed Cataracts as a side effect as well (the new internal lens needed for exchange with the cateract lens, the power of it, is hard to know if you have kc plus a Cataracts! ...Jesus... and a Cataract is a common thing!

First post here smile On steroide use I would say the main issues are glaucoma and also cataracts, my reason for sayin this is down to personal experiance's 1 1/2 years of steroide use after a pk graft raised my iop and also created a cataract. But also I'm a pubmed/ medical journal junkie too so i've read a lot of study's, hopefully i'll be able to bring something usefull to the board.

Hi Tom

First i would like to thank you for posting this link elsewhere if it wasnt for that i would never have found this one.

I have just had a PK on my right eye (3 weeks ago) and i am concerned about what the Pred Forte may do to my eye, i was told i may have to take these drops for about 3 yrs is that true?

luv

I can say from experience that steroid eye drops can cause glaucoma and cataracts. I first got secondary glaucoma.[pressure up to 43] ...three years post graft[after almost two years of the seroid drops because of loose stiches ..i'd just be finished weaning off the drops from getting a loose stich removed and have to get another stich taken out ..] which was two months ago I was diagnosed with cataract in operated eye

I pledge to be angry at nobody or nothing but myself and not to be upset about cataract or eye problems...

I feel sorry for anyone else who has eye problems thought

hiya geraldine was that when i was posting on the kcentre forum? My oridgional doctor didn't want to admit that my high iop (mine was in the 40's also when it peaked) was due to steroide use.

Yes I got a problem with glaucoma due to the maxidex drops when i was on the kcentere forums..around the time you did

I am sorry you got cataract..

For me the most baffling thing is how the cataract developed in my unoperated eye[it is only a shaddow in that eye but still i would say that is unusual at 25]

Good luck to you all
