BASELINE FINDINGS IN RETROSPECTIVE DIGITAL COMPUTER ANALYSIS OF KERATOCONUS EVOLUTION (REDCAKE) PROJECT

This work is the first of a series of papers to discuss the results of the Retrospective Digital Computer Analysis of Keratoconus Evolution (REDCAKE), beginning with the baseline analysis for a large cohort of keratoconus patients. It looks at how the stage of the disease affects the cone curvature and position, and presents curves that may be used a guideline for keratoconus follow-up.

Hopefully "red cake" will further aid detention and help to nip (Keratoconus progression) in the bud.

Here is the conclusion:

The staging map set presented can be used as a graphical guidance to classify keratoconus stage. Keratoconus presented asymmetrically, and generally the posterior surface was more affected than the anterior surface or the thickness. Asymmetry is playing a role in KC detection. Although Pmin was almost invariably located inferotemporally, Kmax location showed higher variability and distance from the apex.

Logistic Index For Keratoconus Detection And Severity Scoring (LOGIK)

Knowing the stage of a keratoconic cornea is essential for progression follow-up and the choice of treatment. Proper staging can be challenging, however, since many of the available parameters are inadequate to the task (e.g. K_max and Pachy_min). This then inspired them to develop the Logistic Index for Keratoconus (Logik), a platform-independent scoring system based on corneal elevation maps and machine learning. This system was proven reliable in identifying suspect keratoconus and scoring the severity of the disease, with a good agreement with other, existing approaches while achieving better performance.
