Desperate Need of Help! Searching for good doctor in New York City
Permalink

Hi all, I am searching for a good keratoconus doctor in New York City or Jersey City. I am considering taking CXL epi-on surgery but can not find a good doctor that has related experience after trying out 3. I am really desperate right now as I can sense my eyes getting worse everyday. Could anyone who had great experience with doctors in NYC help me? Thank you very much!

Hi Yuka,

Please understand that CXL is still in investigative status in the United States. I know that it is being done quite a bit for a procedure that is not FDA approved, but the number of doctors that do it are limited because they have to follow protocols for experimental procedures. Epi On versus Epi Off is certainly one of the aspects where there is a lot of disagreement among doctors investigating the procedure. My doctor, Dr. Yaron Rabinowitz, strongly believes in Epi Off (keratoconus.com). (I was never a candidate for CXL.) I wouldn't select my doctor based on wanting someone who does CXL Epi On. Select a doctor you trust and then let them advise you what they feel is best for you. CXL is only one small component of managing keratoconus. You need a doctor to manage your keratoconus, not a mechanic to retread your cornea.

Finding a doctor who really specializes in keratoconus seems to be much harder than you would expect. One approach might be to find an optometrist who specializes in fitting contact lenses for keratoconus and then ask them for recommendations for an ophthalmologist who specializes in corneas. It might also be worthwhile looking for doctors who have written academic articles about keratoconus treatments who practice in your area.

Hope you are able to find a good doctor to help you.

I am leaving my previous post, just for historical context. There is now an FDA approved CXL procedure in the United States based on products from Avedro. You can go to their website to find practitioners who perform their procedure: avedro.com/en-us/ The Avedro procedure is Epi Off.

Dear Jim KC,

Thank you so much for your informative reply! I am really frightened these days feeling being alone and do not know who to turn to for help. Thank you so much really!

Just want to ask another question. So is that the CXL based on Avedro the only CXL approved by FDA so far? No any epi-iff procedure is approved right now?

Again thank you and please if anyone received CXL in NYC with good experience, please leave me a message!

Sincerely,

Yuka

AFAIK Avedro is the only FDA approved CXL.
