I was diagnosed with KC about 8 years ago. I battled with it, until I absolutely could not see with glasses in 2010. Since then my disease has progressed more rapidly and luckily has plateaued over the past 2 years. I got intacs placed in my left eye in 2011 and since then CANNOT wear a contact lens in my left eye without pain :( I thought the purpose of intacs was to help people who were contact lens intolerant. In 2011 when I got them, I could wear contact with the typical pain associated with RGPs, but my doctor recommended them to try and stabilize my eyes and prevent progression, prior to doing cross linking. Since getting the intacs place, whenever I wear a contact in my left eye, I have terrible pain on insertion, and then its uncomfortable during the day, and hurts when I take it out. I moved and found a new optometrist and he recommended intralimbal lenses, ( I had corneal lenses but the docs were never able to fit them properly, so I kept getting corneal abrasions.) but I'm having the same problem with those. He keeps saying its because I don't insert my lens properly ( Yes...after all this time, I'm still terrified to put my lens in, and blink like crazy, so the never end up on my iris, but usually somewhere on the white of my eye and I move them into place. I know, that's not safe, etc etc, but its the only way I can get them in :( ) So, yeah, he keeps saying that its because I place them in incorrectly, but i use the same insertion method with my right eye and I don't have the same degree of pain with insertion, nor do I feel it constantly throughout the day. He not listening to me, and keeps saying i need to learn how to put my lens in correctly. He's right, I do, but that's clearly not the problem since my right eye is perfectly fine, using the same insertion method.
Has anyone else experienced this? Where they have become lens intolerant after Intacs??? I talked to my ophthalmologist about removing the Intacts and he stated he didn't recommend that because the seemed to be in good position and that i should just get a better fitting contact lens and sent me to an optometrist who specializes in Keratoconus. But even with the "expert", I have uncomfortable lens wear and will likely just go back to wearing one contact lens, which is what Ive done since 2011 when my Intacts were placed :(
Usually its due to your eye lid hitting against the lens maybe ? and a tweak of the lens is needed ?
Have you got dry eyes ?
Have your tried soft lens for KC ?
Really speaking, your contact lens fitter needs to find a solution for you, if not, find yet another one ? Ask the above questions to your current fitter.
I don't really have dry eyes. And with these new lenses, he claims the fit is good. He wanted to try the intralimbal rgps first. Did not seem to like soft lens, stating the visual acuity was not as good.
