Call Center / BPOs relocation

I am starting this because of the mention of Call-Centers / BPO's in India in one of the posts.

My country India, has become a hot destination for relocation Call-center operations / Business Process Outsourcing because costs - rental, salaries - here are 1/5th than that of the developed world.

Even British Airways & Uk Railways calls are routed to India.

Most of the call center contracts are from the U.S.. It entails call executives to
work in continous night shift. Usually the life of a night-time call executive fizzles out after 4 years !!

Our economy is booming because of IT & IT es industry. Ther's so much of disposable income with everyone.

An obvious fall-out of this is sky-rocketing of real estate prices. Its gone off the
roof making houses & flats/apartments unaffordable to the common salaried person.

Vocal clarity & accent is an issue with Call-centers in India. Most of us tend to mix our regional (India's is a mixture of 24 different states varying from language to culture - unity in diversity) accent in English. My friend & classmate who works as Admin Mgr of a 150 seat Call-center, says 4 years back when they started operations, American customers were surprised by the funny accent they heard over the phone. When enquired whether they (call-support executives) are in Mexico, they would emphatically reply that they are recent Indian immigrants to the U.S. & that the call-operations are located in California or Texas (in a remote place) !!!!

Now everyone's aware calls are being routed to India for product / service support.

it's become a huge thing hey. and so annoying. and i heard that people have been ripped off from it too because some of the telemarketing that they do is a scam and they just want your credit card details.

Beth --

Mention me one country which is free of scams.

Out-bound (sales oriented) call centers are driven by targets as with any sales company. Call-executives fear losing their jobs if individual targets are not met. Hence they resort to all these gimmicks. ' Promising the Heaven & Giving the Earth ' theory.

Taking the liberty to quote what you've said before --
Beth said - " i HATE those telemarketers who call from india! it's so annoying! they call jsut at dinner time, or during favourite tv shows... and i hate it especially when you try and be polite and tell them you aren't interested... and they won't let you go, so then you feel rude for just hanging up on them. we get a couple of calls a week... although my dad's latest theory is to cost the company money by keeping them on the phone for a long time... and telling the person what a great deal they are trying to sell, etc... and then at the end saying 'oh i never buy anything from unsolicited telephone calls' and then hangs up. "

Well, guess your father has lots of time & patience to deal with these gimmicks. Wish there were more people like that in this world.

Even we get unsolicited calls in our mobiles from domestic call centers. But I don't have enough patience like your father. I just say 'not interested ' & cut the phone.

yes well dad decided that he doesn't want to buy anything from them, so he will cost them money for taking his time, so he keeps them on the phone as long as he can. i just hang up. but yes, you are right, there is scams everywhere... however i wouldn't ever buy anything over the phone unless it was from a company i was familiar with and the person had an australian accent!
