Do you know that there is a powerful new methode of in vivo imaging of corneal structures? it is called Confocal Microscopie. I'm not sure, but il looks lke it was Prof. Guthoff from Rostok Uni (GR) who developed this method and first used it for corneal science.

This is a short recent summury called "In vivo confocal microscomy of the human cornea"

As a resume I can propose the following statements that I found in this article:

1. Corneal thickness. It is currently measured by ultrasonic methodes called pachymetry. When yiu use confocal microscopy (Corneal Microscopie Through Focusing) you get another width. Apparently PACHIMETRY OVERESTIMATES CORNEAL WIDTH. How much was not in the article but we may track it down. Actually this may be critical for X_linking: it is not performed if corneal thivkness is < 400Ám.

2. Contact lens wear. Here I cite" Contact lens wear is another very popular method of correcting refractive error that potentially can affect the cornea in myriad of ways. ...CM has been used to confirm the following known acute and chronic contact lens induced phenomenon: increased surface epithelial cell size, epithelial thinning, stromal folds, endothelial blebs and endothelial polymegethism....For example, superficial cell size increase is higher with high oxygen transmissibility rigid gas permeable lenses than soft lenses (high or low oxygen transmissiblility and epithelial thinning effects follow the hierarchy: high oxygen transmissibility rgp > low oxygen transmissiblity hydrogel > high oxygen transmissiblity silicone hydrogel. " Etc..;There are some studies that chalengeDo you know that this observation. See the article. Please Click Here

I think personally that the fact that mild kc is missed at laser centers... if the news gets out to the wider public that will cause there to be change... where kc is detected earlier and then x linking treatment can be offered sooner... and also the true figure of how many people have kc will come out... and people can then avoid getting advance kc and even contacts and of course the one in five chance of a transplant... which is a very high figure...

Great post Yarsky...
