Hello,

Yes you can do PRK and reduce the irregular astigmatism of kc and provide a better surface to the cornea but it also depends on your current thickness.

Moreover, because the PRK is topography guided and not a standard PRK,you need the best screening machine to make out your corneal topography such as PENTACAM.

With the topography guided PRK you are not trying to eliminate the need for glasses or contacts but to provide more BALANCE to the cornea. That is why also it is limited meaning 50 microns ablation only.

From my experience, the best thing by performing the Topogrphy guided PRK treatment is the quality of vision that you have after the treatment and the sharpness and clarity of everything at daytime. That is a huge success in my opinion. If i can make an example to that its like that you were seeing the world through an old technology television and after you have a brand new LCD TFT tv with millions of colours.

Best Wishes,

P.S The most important factor is the flying spot laser you will choose to be treated and if it has been designed for aspherical corneas-correction.

My13 yr. old son Zack is newly diagnosed and in the mild stages of KC. We are from Chicago. As many of you know there is no crosslinking option available for here (some trials starting, but not for his age.) We are in contact w/ Dr. Sporel in Dresden Germany by email, who has reviewed his medical records, and varified that Zack would be a good candidate for the crosslinking procedure. We hope to halt his KC while it is not damaging his vision so much yet. As a nervous mother, I'd love to hear other x-linking experiences and how they went for you. Also, if the MDs in Dresdin can't get us in fairly soon, do any of you recommend other German, or European cities that do the procedure. We are trying to make travel plans for next month. Thank you for your time...

Lisa

Ones that I can think of off the top of my head are:

Athens, Greece A 1st choice crosslinking + PRK
Dortmond, Germany 2nd choice crosslinking
Dresden, Germany 2nd choice crosslinking

I would got to Athens it is the best choice I have ever made!

My thougth on your sons situation...

-Your son is 13 his eyes have not finished growing so prk is probably a bad idea but Dr. Kanellopolous(Athen,s Greece) would know best since he is the only doctor with the most experience using both crosslinking and PRK together

-Your son should definately be get crosslinking as the best solution I believe

Your son is very young so there are more risks involved. If your son does not do anything his vision will most likely get really bad and he will have one hell of a time making it through day to day life endless headaches and stuggling to see as his vision deteriorates. If your son has crosslinking this should prevent the keratoconus from getting worse BUT since he is 13 his eyes are still growing and this could cause them to stop or something out of the norm to happen. If you do crosslinking and PRK together his vision will be fixed to almost perfect or pretty close BUT his eyes will still have the same problem and that is that they were in the middle of growing and you have potentially prevented them from growing and the possibility of the keratoconus getting worse. So you really have to look at everything and make the best decision.

If it was me and I was 13 knowing what I know now I would crosslink and possibly hold off on the PRK until I was 19 or 20 because you said his eyes were not that bad yet.

If he was 20 I would definately do both crosslinking and PRK. You should really speak to Dr. Kanellopolous to see is both crosslinking and PRK are a good idea at 13 y/o

Here's what everyone on this thread has been waiting for the 6 Month topography scan so here they are and the results are amazing at the moment.

Results were taken on EXACTLY THE SAME MACHINES AS BEFORE

6 Months To The Day After Surgery:

Left Eye 6 Months To The Day After Surgery:

Right Eye 6 Months To The Day After Surgery:

Thanks so much for sharing your 6 month results!

I'm curious to know how much your best-corrected vision has improved and/or how much you may have seen some reduction in irregular astigmatism symptoms, like ghosting.

It seems that there has in fact been some reduction in irregular astigmatism in your left eye (the SAI/SRI are both improved)...do you see this as an improvement in your best-corrected vision? I don't know if you've been able to get a prescription yet...I can imagine that it's amazing to not need glasses as much...but it'll be great to know if you also find that your vision with glasses (or soft contacts) is also improved!

My vision as of right now without glasses or contacts, I just checked on the snellen chart I have.

Results:
Right Eye
-I can read the 20/20 line on the chart with a little bit of a ghosting upwards which prevents me from reading the characters on the 20/15 line.

Left Eye
-I can read the 20/15 line no noticable ghosting

Surgery Date = Oct 24th 2007
Current Date = May 25th 2008

Daytime right now:
I don't NOTICE any ghosting with both eyes open and my vision is 20/15.
Seperate:
Left Eye = 20/15 no ghosting
Right Eye = 20/20 slight single ghost directly upwards which prevents me from reading 20/15 with this eye

Nightime results from today:
Left Eye = 20/20 some characters onthe 20/15 can be read (very faint ghosting from left, left bottom corner, and down)
Right Eye = 20/30 slight single ghost directly upwards
