We are looking for a DR. in California who does Intacs, CK, & C3-R since my husband will more than likely need combination treatment if he is a candidate.  Based on internet research we are considering Dr. Brian S. Boxer Wachler.  We are gathering the reports they requested and will be sending them soon.  I was wondering if anyone else has used him.  His credentials and testimonials are impressive but we have not yet met with him personally.
Thank you,
Judy

Hello my friend.

In my opinion and from my research Dr Waschler is a well known doctor.I have watched videos with him, saying things about keratoconus and explaining the C3R treatment.

His institute i think its located in Beverly Hills.Sorry for saying that, but i think in Beverly Hills people are going for plastic surgeries.Dr Wascler is a doctor who knows excellent the marketing methods and i dont like that to a doctor.I think that united states has that fame.

Here in Europe is first the patient and second everything else.I have understand that from my experience. But sometimes they exist exceptions from the rule.

Collagen cross linking or x-linking was borned in Germany. In my opinion this is the Country that you should visit. Also,i have heard that Dr Waschler is performing the treatment without removing the epithelium and that in my opinion is wrong. In Germany they know something more that they remove the epithelium. So will you be taking the risk with Dr Waschler not performing the treatment as the standard prototype at Germany?

I wouldnt take that risk and from the people i see and read here i would go straight to Germany(Dresden). Also, in  my opinion always, if you could read and ask anyone at United states and find out about my doctor, Doctor Kanellopoulos.I have seen patients coming from America to visit Dr K and his institute here in Greece.

Your final option is yours but if i were you i would read all the posts from here and i will search more. From the method someone uses and from his experience to the cost you are willing to pay.But for me no matter what the cost is your husband that really counts and not the stupid money.I am telling you that because i have heard a person talking about costs and money like we are doing accountance in here. That is sad.

I hope for you all the best and if i could be any more assistance to you i would be glad.

Hello KC wife

to echo what our friend Zeus said, indeed to the issue of dcotors being more and more invovled in marketing is a rther alarming trend all across themedical field.

While I haven't had any perosnal experiences with Dr Boxer Wachler nor do I know anyone who has, I would steer away from comenting on him as it would be donwright unfair.

It is clear the Dr BW is indeed well known as Zeus. However I personally end to get seriously wary from doctors who tkae a very "gimmicky" approch to things, I mean that in general not just Dr BW.

Having had many experiences with Drs lately the only advice I can give to you from the heart is always always ALWAYS do your research. you cannot do enough. I have found myself beng dissppointed by doctors even after doing lots of research and putting my faith in them. My advice is to ask other people who have had experience with that specific docotrs and keep a VERY open mind. Not all doctors and patients are the same. You need to find a doctor with an appraoch that wil lwork for you. You are also better off with a doc who will not shy away from having an open discussion about ALL treatment options and styles and who will give you a good justification as to why he/she has hosen a specific approach. Never settle down for an "because I said so" type of answer. Regrettably many docs do that and thats usually in my epxorience where things didnt work.

I would also like to reiteate what Zeus said, indeed you should consider other docs in Europe or Asia who have been highly reccommended on this site. I ahve perosnally recived reccomendations from other KC patients I know who went to docs int he US (including Dr BW) who ended up going to Europe or Asia to get x-linked and they have nothing but postove feedback. I would also (personally) go for x-linking done according to the protocol established by the fols at Dresden, bbecause this is the protocoal that has all the research and clinical history to support it. I am not saying other ways of x-linking don't work or wont work, but for now its safer to go with what has been established. That was my rational when I went and did my own x-linking. Besides getting the epithlieum reomoved is really no big deal. I think people sweat about it too much.

sorry for thre long reply but I hope it helps :)

Hello --

My son (age 22 at the time) was treated by Dr. Boxer Wachler in April with a very good result. He had both Intacs and C3R. The recovery seemed fairly easy. We were very impressed with the doctor and his staff and were treated well during all our visits. While it might seem from the website that he is all about marketing, he was patient in answering questions, careful about retesting everything before initiating the procedures, and called our hotel that evening to check on the patient.

My son's choice, at present, is to try to avoid contacts, so he is managing well with a slight squint and can drive fine and keep up in his college classes.

I think there are many good doctors to choose from, however, if it's important to you to be treated in the US (it was a key criterion for my son) we seem to STILL only have one doctor here who does it.

Feel free to private message me if you have any questions.

All the best.

Dr. Boxer Wachler is an incredible choice for anyone dealing with KC. He pioneered Visian ICL and the C3-R procedure and completely restored the vision of U.S. bobsled captain, Steve Holcomb who, thanks to Dr. Boxer Wachler, is competing for Olympic gold this Thursday.

Here is an article that might help. http://www.newstimes.com/sports/article/Bobsledder-a-sight-to-behold-for-others-with-361928.php

TeeGar, please don't get too excited with these marketing tricks. It is obvious that Steve Holcomb was just at the onset of kc. No doctor is a God.
Anyway, my personal opinion is that dr. Wachler is a good doctor who is actively working in kc and I think he is one of the best, pioneer fitters for INTACS.
However, I have done CXL (which means crosslinking WITH epithelium removal) and not his C3-R (which means crosslinking WITHOUT epithelium removal) and I agree with Zeus (as many kc doctors do) that this is the effective way to do it. There is an ongoing debate on this topic, so there are many research papers for/against C3-R you could read before making your decision.

(@JNewman, I certainly do not mean that C3-R will not work, but in some cases it does and some cases it does not)

I had a wonderful experience with Dr. Boxer Wachler - I had CK, Intacs, and C3-R done with him in September of this year. He was incredibly down to earth as well as the same core-group of staff he has around him. Amazing!
