The surgeon is in Beverly Hills - the only one doing this as far as I know and has been doing it for five years now.  It is considered "off label" and is a "vitamin" so not covered by insurance.  But his patients have had a high success rate with the intacs/crosslinking with epi left on.   The solution was brushed on which may have had a little bit of a scraping effect and helped the solution penetrate, but I am not sure as my eye was completely numb.   The riboflavin is dropped on the eyes in  "epi off" procedure.

The surgeon has done studies of his patients and has used the studies and expertise of Dr. Pinelli and colleagues who are from Italy, Egypt and India.   I saw on this forum (one of the most recent posts) that a transepithelial riboflavin solution is now being marketed in Europe.  Seems like there is more convincing evidence for the epi on treatment.     If you look up intacsforkeratoconus.com or holcomb c3-r you can get more information on the opthalmologist I went to.

Besides his expertise in this field, I also chose this physician because financially it was (surprisingly) less expensive  to fly across the country and do both crosslinking and intacs than to  have intacs only placed at another physician's office just an hour from home.   I figured that if it didn't work I technically didn't lose any money.

Sincerely,  Elizabeth
