Waiting for Keratoconus Progression

INDIANAPOLIS  - The management of Keratoconus and the controversies specifically related to insurance coverage of corneal crosslinking is discussed by Brooke Messer, OD, FAAO, FSLS, from Vance Thompson Vision.

“Something I find really interesting about the state of crosslinking in this country [US] is that we have to prove that patients with keratoconus are progressing in order to be considered eligible to have corneal crosslinking done and covered by their insurance,” Messer said.

As keratoconus is by definition a progressive condition, Messer posed the question of why a patient’s vision should potentially have to worsen before they can be considered eligible for treatment.

“Why do we have to wait?” she asked.
